We love mental health and well-being in York
Love Arts is a new kind of festival – one which gets the people of York talking about mental health and wellbeing – and what better way to get people talking than through arts, creativity and the flourishing arts scene in the city?
The idea for Love Arts first came about when organisations across the city started planning arts events to address issues related to mental health. When they started talking with each other it became clear there was a large groundswell of opinion for a city wide festival. The new project group was able to use the expertise from Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust who organised a Love Arts Festival in Leeds as part of its commitment to raising awareness and challenging mental health stigma. The festival in Leeds was immediately successful, with positive feedback from thousands of audiences and participants. 80% of people said they felt more comfortable talking about mental health and wellbeing as a result of being part of festival events and activities.
The Love Arts York festival builds on learning from previous festivals but also one with its own unique flavour and approach. We have been able to harness the huge energy in York using a group of like-minded people from the community, voluntary, arts and education sectors to start planning and making connections.
Our simple aim is to get people talking and to make York a better place to live for the one in four people affected by mental ill-health, their families and their friends. And we believe this will make York and an even better place to live for everyone.
